What about drugs and pornographic material?

E-mail Print PDF

In March 2008 the Indonesian parliament passed a bill criminalizing the access of internet sites containing violent or pornographic material. Anyone found guilty of this offense could be jailed for up to three years or required to pay a heavy fine.

Engaging in sexual conduct with children, using, and/or disseminating child pornography is a crime prosecutable in the United States regardless of the country where the activity occurs. The Indonesian child protection law imposes up to 15 years in prison for those convicted of engaging in sexual contact with a child and the anti-trafficking in persons law imposes 15 years in prison for anyone engaging in sex with a victim of trafficking.

Penalties for possession of, use of, or trafficking in illegal drugs in Indonesia are severe, and convicted offenders can expect long jail sentences and heavy fines. A life sentence or the death penalty can be given in cases of drug trafficking; several foreigners have been sentenced to death in recent years. One U.S. citizen was given a life sentence for drug trafficking. Indonesian prisons are harsh and do not meet Western standards. Many prisoners are required to supplement their prison diets and clothing with funds from relatives. Medical care in Indonesian prisons, while available, is below Western standards, and it is often difficult to obtain access to medical testing to diagnose illness as well as medications to treat conditions.

How to get to Padang?

E-mail Print PDF

The most forthright way to get to Padang is by air via Jakarta. There are two suitable alternatives worth looking into. They are flying to Padang from Kuala Lumpur or Singapore. Additionally, more adventurous itineraries, involving travel by land and sea, are available for those with limited resources.

The default method of getting to Padang is by air, via Jakarta. Leaving from Europe, there are frequent flights to Jakarta on lots of major world airlines, including Singapore Airlines, Thai International, Cathay Pacific, Lufthansa, KLM, Air France, British Airways, among others. From Australia and East Asia, there are frequent non-stop flights to Jakarta from all major cities. From North America west coast, there are good connections to Jakarta on major Asian airlines such as Singapore Airlines, China Airlines, and Thai International among others. From North America east coast, travelers can go either trans-Atlantic or trans-Pacific and they have approximately the same duration. From Jakarta to Padang, a little bit over one hour by air, there are about a dozen daily flights, on a variety of domestic airlines, including Air Asia, Garuda, and a few other ones. It is always advantageous to have this connection to Padang on the same day. It is not recommended to arrive in Padang a few hours before your boat’s departure. Flights may get canceled or surfboard bags may get lost, thus it is best practice to spend the night before your trip in Padang. Considering the facts just mentioned, you are better off spending the night in Padang instead of Jakarta.

Another way of getting to Padang by air is via Kuala Lumpur. This route does not offer as many options as from Jakarta, but it may cut travel time in a few hours depending where you are coming from. The best bet is Air Asia, which offers daily flights from Kuala Lumpur to Padang and back. Kuala Lumpur is a beautiful city to visit if you have the chance and budget to stay overnight.

Yet another limited way of getting to Padang by air is via Singapore. Tiger Airways is an option when flying from Singapore to Padang.
